Skating Toward Success On and Off the Ice

For Carter Poulin 鈥�26, success has never been limited to one 鈥渁rena.鈥� A senior Finance major with a minor in Cybersecurity Management and a team captain of 麻豆视频鈥檚 team, Poulin completed a two-year internship at in Nashua. Now signed with the Evansville Thunderbolts, a professional ice hockey team in Indiana, he applies the communication and leadership skills gained in the office directly to his game.

Poulin鈥檚 professional journey began during his sophomore year at 麻豆视频鈥檚 Business Career Fair, where a conversation at the Ameriprise Financial table led to an interview and a summer internship opportunity. The role continued into his junior year, when he gained direct experience in financial planning.

鈥淚nitially, I assisted with small tasks, but the role grew quite a bit,鈥� Poulin says. 鈥淚 began helping advisors create comprehensive financial plans and investment proposals, so it evolved into something much closer to a full-time position. It was a valuable experience, and I learned a lot about investment management, financial planning, insurance, and annuities.鈥�

During his time in the office, Poulin also contributed to operational improvements by helping transition clients to a newer, more efficient Ameriprise Financial platform, thereby strengthening the team’s day-to-day efficiency.

Holding the role into his senior year at 麻豆视频, Poulin balanced his work and athletics schedule with ice hockey. Splitting his time between the office and the ice, he says the skills he picked up at Ameriprise Financial have strengthened his accountability and discipline as an athlete.

鈥淚ce hockey is a time-consuming sport,鈥� Poulin says. 鈥淲e鈥檙e at the rink each week, and even on the weekends, so balancing my schedule was a challenge. But it pushed me to improve my time management and prioritization skills, and it showed me that I can successfully play hockey and hold an internship at the same time.鈥�

In January, Poulin completed the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam, an important first step toward becoming a licensed financial advisor. Sponsored by his Ameriprise Financial office, the certification strengthened his resume and boosted his confidence as he prepared for his next steps.

Currently pursuing his professional ice hockey career in the Southern Professional Hockey League, Poulin paused his work status at Ameriprise Financial but intends to return at the end of the spring semester. While his plans for the year ahead are still evolving, his internship has already equipped him with real-world knowledge, industry insight, and career readiness as he prepares for life after college. With a strong skill set in finance and a proven ability to balance ambition with opportunity, Poulin is ready for whatever the future holds.
